GAME TRAILER

BOLD UI + CLEAN LAYOUT

Idle games, whose gameplay consists of the player performing simple actions such as clicking on the screen repeatedly to earn some in-game currency often have a ton of functions. In combination with the highly stylized art I needed to come up with simple and clear UI to stand out from the rest of the artwork.

Following typical mobile practices main game HUD’s were placed at the very top and very bottom of the screen, squeezing as much pixel space as we could. A decision was made to attach all other game UI to the left and right sides of the screen as to further clear up space.

ART ASSETS AND STYLING

Style is everything so to keep in line with the tone of the game I created assets that lived in the same world. Dialogue boxes and messages used a paper scroll or banner typically seen in medieval times.

CREATION AND USABILITY

Most of the assets are created using custom photoshop shapes and some hand drawn details. The assets were built in a way that would allow them to expand if need be. This helped us with making adjustments to the overall layout for spacing as well as help us with localization.

ICON ILLUSTRATION

This game relies heavily on icons to communicate with the user in various ways. We use icons to show the different types of currency, types of power ups, tournament rewards etc., I had the pleasure of illustrating a handful of these assets.

Typically, I am head down into the UI/UX of a project so art tasks are usually sent to illustrators. I was happy to flex my drawing skill to create these cool little bits. Here are a some of the icons I got to work on for Dungeon Shop Tycoon.

ANIMATIONS

There are a bunch of crazy and cool characters that live in the Dungeon Shop Tycoon world. We brought them to life to show each ones own personality and style. I was able to stretch my legs and handle some of these animations.

I created the idle animations for each one of our managers. These would be used when a manager is activated and are out on the floor of the game.

THE PROCESS

MOOD BOARD AND EXPLORATION

Being a casual game we chose to keep the medieval theme light and fun. Making sure to also integrate an ‘animation’ aesthetic into every piece of art that was created. These are only a few images of many we reviewed as a team, we also took note of existing idle / medieval games out there to see how other teams worked around the theme.
